YES! This is an original Hans J. Wegner design made by Johannes Hansen! And to all you PURISTS out there, it’s one of the EARLY ones! Yes, it has that lovely signature that causes a “catch” in our collective throats when searching for its provenance.
Back in 2009, the early days of An Orange Moon, we did a number of television shows. One of my favorites was called “Bring It Home.” At the time we had 4 Hans Wegner chairs on the floor. During the filming of the show I remember talking extensively about the designer, the workmanship of the piece and how Kennedy won the election because of “the sit.” Here’s a blurb I found online that will corroborate my findings.
“In 1960, the TV company CBS bought twelve copies of the chair for the first live broadcast of an election debate; between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon. It was Kennedy who requested this chair, he wanted a comfortable chair for his aching back. 70 million people watched the Wegner chair on live broadcast and it was even mentioned in the newspaper election reports the day after. Afterwards the CBS manager, donated the twelve chairs to the Smithsonian Institute.
WOW! Unbelievable! As a shopkeeper on my feet daily, I can attest to the need for a “good sit.” It’s like Wegner knew the vertebrates verbatim–L5 and L4 are prevalent spots for developing sciatica and he nailed it, comfort wise! (Shout out to all the Orthopedic Doctors!).
I digress. “THE CHAIR” is iconic!
