Description
Uphold Your Men, 1971, color screenprint, 30 x 24 in, by American born Carolyn Mims Lawrence.
Carolyn Mims Lawrence, born 1940, created this highly sought after and incredible screenprint of Uphold Your Men. Carolyn Mims Lawrence was part of the AfriCOBRA movement, an artist collaborative in Chicago. The Coalition of Black Revolutionary Artists (COBRA) soon became the African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists (AfriCOBRA). An organization that strived to uplift and celebrate African American culture and community by creating positive, empowering images of Black life.
As a young woman coming of age during the 60’s, I had the opportunity to view the 1967 mural, aptly named, The Wall of Respect Lawrence and her contemporaries created in the community now known as Bronzeville. The building once located on 47th and Langley Ave in Chicago, no longer stands, but I feel honored I had the opportunity to see it with my own eyes.
